Regina Abril Alcantara Aviles, a senior Communications Studies major, is passionate about researching mobile communication’s role in mental health. This interest stems from her personal experiences with mental health struggles in her family, herself as a college student, and her community. She aspires to earn a PhD in the field of communication that has greatly inspired her. Beyond research, Regina enjoys playing instruments, soccer, reading, and attending sports games.
Maya Barnes
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Maya Barnes is a sophomore pursuing a Communications Major and planning to add a Health and Society minor. She is interested in research that involves mental health particularly focusing on minority groups. Maya’s passion for this expands as she has her own podcast that is dedicated to these types of topics. In the future she hopes to work in the Public Health field as an advocate for underrepresented communities experiencing health disparities. Maya finds joy in traveling, reading, and cherishing moments with her loved ones.


Kexin Gao
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Kexin Gao is a junior majoring in Communication Studies and an international student from Beijing, China. She is curious about an important social issue such as mental health, and understanding how communication can reveal ways to raise awareness and provide support. In addition to her research, Kexin is passionate about producing music, singing and fashion. She enjoys utilizing her creativity to express herself and connect with others.
Yasmin Kim
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Yasmin Kim is a junior Psychology and Sociology double major, minoring in Peace and Justice Studies and Women and Gender Studies. Her research interests involve imposter syndrome, racial minorities, criminal justice, restorative justice, and gender and racial equity. She is excited about exploring research opportunities and contributing to the field. In the future, she plans on pursuing a PhD in Forensic Psychology and a Juris Doctor degree. Outside of the lab, she is a member of the University’s Honors Program and enjoys reading and trying out new coffee shops.
